She flies on the wind when there’s gold on the water
And canyon winds carry her soul
A mother walks through the trees with her daughter
A mother walks the waters alone
Down by her riverside home
Down by her riverside home
Down by the water where the cool grass is calling
Down by her riverside home
And she tells me she sees her flying and calling
She tells me she’s never alone
She tells me she hears the echoes of laughter
As the monsoons quench the coy canyon stones
Down by her riverside home
Down by her riverside home
Down by the water where the cool grass is calling
Down by her riverside home
Tears on the water for the mother and daughter
Long roots and bones in the cottonwood groves
You’ll never find her, you’re always behind her
Try to ease the sorrow of the old river crone
When you’re down by her riverside home
Down by her riverside home
Down by the water where the cool grass is calling
Down by her riverside home
about
La llorona is a Southwestern legend of a river witch who wanders the rivers and acequias (irrigation canals) looking for her children who were carried away in a seasonal monsoon flood. It’s said she will carry away children who wander too close to the water by themselves. In many ways she is the spirit of the love and grief embodied in Southwestern rivers where water tends to be thin blue ribbons of life surrounded by vast swaths of rocky, sandy desert. In this tune I’ve found a spot by a river in a southern canyon that I love. When I’m there I always meet up with a local woman who tells me stories about her daughter who died by the river. She tells me how she flies through the canyon on the spring winds and i listen to her. It’s sort of a price of entry to enjoy the enchanted spot by the water. I don’t ask questions about who the woman is. I just listen until she moves on.
